Description

China is a huge country, the third largest in the world, bigger than the United States. Look at it on a map. Its virtually all of northern Asia. Beijing is in the North, Shanghia is further south and Hong Kong is in the deep south. Its an old country with a lot of history. Outside of the cities, much of the country does not have a modern infrastructure. Chinese has almost 1.5 billion people and a glut of males since they were favored during the one-child-only era and girls were routinely aborted or killed by the parents shortly after birth so as a result, many men will not find wives. Every region has its own customs. Theyre a bunch of different tribes. The biggest tourist attraction is probably the Great Wall. Hong Kong and Macau operate as "one country, two systems." Theyre freer than mainland China. Taiwan sees itself as a sovereign nation while China sees it as one of its provinces. Many Chinese bathrooms are squat bathrooms. Most tourists save it for their hotel rooms. Expect people to spit, stare and even ask for money. There is some crime there mainly because poor people are desperate with nothing to lose. Karaoke is big stuff. China is at a point where they are developing tourism to make money off it. There are even adventure and fishing tours now. Departing passengers pay a domestic departure tax. China is still a police state but this rarely affects foreigners. They just harass their own citizens. Try #915.113 at the library. Shanghai was once a bohemian, international port city. It was profiled on a documentary series as one of the three top sin cities of the world behind Paris and Berlin in the 1920s and 30s. As a port city, it has influences from many cultures: Russian, French, Jewish, etc. Unlike most other big cities in the world, Shanghai is very modern because it was built up mostly in the past twenty years. Shanghai has been described as capitalist, pop culture China, not the real China which is considerably more dreary. The population is fifteen million. The Bund is the waterfront entertainment area.
